Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Madras

“Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha” was established in the year 1918 by our beloved Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, with the sole aim of propagating Hindi in the southern states. The first Pracharak was none other than Devadoss Gandhi, son of Mahatma Gandhi.

“Hindi Prachar” was a movement that emerged as part of the Freedom Movement. The leaders who led the nation to “FREE INDIA” felt the necessity of making a single Indian Language the National Language and, through that language, unifying the people to intensify National Integration.

In 1927, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha emerged as an independent organization, and Mahatma Gandhi remained its President until he breathed his last.

Our Story

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha — A Legacy of National Integration

‘Hindi Prachar’ was a movement that emerged as part of India’s Freedom Movement. The leaders who led the nation to “FREE INDIA” felt the necessity of making a single Indian language the National Language and, through that language, unifying the people to intensify National Integration.

In 1927, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha emerged as an independent organisation with Mahatma Gandhi as its President until he breathed his last. Gandhiji desired that the ‘Hindi Prachar’ work in the South be carried out with active participation of the local people. The Sabha’s first office was established at George Town in Madras, later shifting to Mylapore, and then to Triplicane where it functioned until 1936.

Provincial branches were established in 1936 to intensify the movement, and the Sabha moved into its present location in Thyagaraya Nagar, Madras, on a sprawling 7-acre land. The foundation was laid by Janab Abdul Hameed Khan, and the building was inaugurated on 7th October 1936 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then President of the Indian National Congress.

1922

Preliminary Hindi Examinations began under the Sabha’s banner. The first degree-level examination, Rashtrabasha Visharad, was conducted in 1931, with the convocation addressed by Shri Kaka Kalelkar.

1936

Sabha shifted to its permanent headquarters in Thyagaraya Nagar, Madras. Provincial branches were set up in all southern states to expand the Hindi Prachar movement.

1946

Silver Jubilee celebrated under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi after the Second World War. To commemorate his visit, the Gandhi Mantap was later constructed and inaugurated on 9th June 1963 by Shri Morarji Desai.

1993

The Amritotsav (Platinum Jubilee) celebrations were inaugurated by Hon. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, then President of the Sabha, at his residence in New Delhi.

Today

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha continues to promote Hindi education and national unity, conducting numerous examinations, teacher training programs, and academic events across South India. The Mahatma Gandhi Convocation Hall remains a landmark of its enduring legacy.
